Hello my dear friends. Nelson here. So let me give you a quick background.
SAS, Survivors Against Suicide, was born in June of 2006, three months after my mother, Marsha Lynn Thomas, committed suicide. It was then, after the pain and surprise had subsided (a little), that I realized what God had put me on this planet for. There are many orgs designed for suicide prevention. Those are great and meaningful organizations, yet very few are aimed at assisting “survivors” (those left behind after a friend or family member commits suicide) rebuild after a tragedy one can never prepare for.
During the weeks after moms death, I had to assist in helping my dad get back on his feet regarding financial stability. He and mom had been married for over 35 years yet he had never paid a bill. That was mom’s territory. She kept all books and budgets and he brought home the bacon. He knew nothing about their finances, what to pay or where to pay them. He was lost and I remember the expression of loss as we tried to educate him during a time he didn’t even want to exist. That memory has burned in me for over 15 years. It’s time to make a difference.
Our mission at SAS is to give hope and guidance to those survivors who have lost themselves due to suicide’s destruction. To reassure them that they are not alone and to assist them in rebuilding what’s been destroyed. It has taken 15 years for this dream to come alive. And it is alive. More to come. Thank you for being here. God bless.
